Sure you can! But how has that worked for you so far? Most likely, the reason you are here is because you know you need some help. The vast majority of business owners are not writers, and don’t understand how to tell the story of their customer's transformation well enough to do it properly. In fact, most business owners only know how to talk about their products and that is the first mistake!
Many of my clients come to me after months (or years) of trying to do this on their own. They wasted time and energy to get to a place of total frustration, and then finally reached out for help to get it done right.
So yes, you can try it on your own. But please keep me in mind if you get stuck.
Most people LOVE this process. We have three 90-minute meetings. In the first two meetings, I ask a ton of questions, you come up with a ton of ideas and words; it’s major brainstorming. Just when you feel like you’re saying all the same things over and over, I put all your words into a magic device (actually, it’s a template) and it comes out as this intriguing narrative of how you serve your clients.
In our final session, we review your draft script and refine it. I also provide strategies for how to implement it. We go from a jumble of words and ideas to a polished script in just three sessions! We can finish in as little as two weeks.
Oh, and you get all the notes and words you came up with in case you want to use them later.
Most people say it’s pretty fun. And enlightening!
Logistically, we meet over zoom for 60- or 90-minute sessions. I ask lots of really great questions, listen deeply, and help you explore deeper meaning and ideas that may be buried just beneath the surface. Then we get off the call and I get to work.
I send you draft versions of whatever we're working on for your review and suggestions, and put the final copy — plus suggestions for how to use it — into your Marketing Playbook.
My style of working is not afraid to lean in, nor am I pushy. I have a keen ability to see the big picture and the details; it’s one of my super-powers. In college I majored in Sociology, with an emphasis on Women’s and Multi-cultural Studies, and a minor in Psychology. I like to study the way people behave and think and respond, and I'm particularly interested in the impact of systems of marginalization and how to disrupt them.
I worked in healthcare administration for nearly 20 years, primarily as a project manager and change agent.
Since starting my own birth support business in 2001, I applied my insights from sociology, psychology, and business operations to run and market my business. At first, I loathed marketing. Then I started to realize the creativity within that task, and started taking master classes in marketing in 2016. I found out I really loved it!
I began teaching business basics courses for birth professionals in 2006, then moved into coaching birth professionals to start and optimize their businesses in 2014, and developed my JumpStart Your Doula Business 12-month program in 2018. I continue to serve as a life and business coach for individuals and groups.
I am a graduate of Women Rocking Business’ Entrepreneurial Leadership Academy, The Narrative Project's Get Your Book Done, Business Made Simple University, StoryBrand Guide training, and CopyHackers Copy School.
I am no longer a Certified StoryBrand Guide, but I recommend StoryBrand to all my clients. Just reading the book will take you a long way, and you’ll go even further with any of their online or in-person courses.
